What is a rainbow?

A rainbow is a stunning display of colors that forms in the sky when sunlight hits water droplets in the air. It’s like Mother Nature’s own personal light show!

When sunlight hits a water droplet, it refracts, or bends, and separates into its different colors. The water droplet acts like a tiny prism, spreading the colors of the rainbow across the sky.

The colors you see in a rainbow depend on the size of the water droplets and the angle of the sunlight. Smaller droplets produce brighter, more vibrant colors, while larger droplets produce more muted colors.

When you see a rainbow, you are actually seeing all of the colors of the visible spectrum, combined and refracted by the water droplets in the air. It’s a truly amazing sight to behold!

Rainbows are made up of seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

And remember, if you want to impress your friends, you can always rattle off the colors of the rainbow in order!
